Piano Lessons for Kids

Private Lessons Registration 2025 / 2026 | On The Off Beat Music School

The piano is an easy instrument for learning the basics of music. Reading music above the keyboard helps young children develop neural links between visual cues, muscle memory and musical notes. Children as young as 5 years old can start piano lessons. However, we recommend trial lessons first to ensure they can reach the keyboard and focus for half an hour. By 6 years, most children can start 1/2-hour weekly classes on the same day each week. Their teacher might recommend longer lessons as their abilities progress.

Piano Lessons for Adults

We also offer piano lessons for adults at any level. Whether you are just starting to learn how to play the piano or rusty after taking a break for several years, our adult piano lesson packages are flexible to accommodate busy schedules. We recommend weekly or bi-weekly lessons for 45 minutes for adults to get the most out of each session.

Our Piano Studios

We offer some of the best studios and pianos in the East End for student learning. Our acoustic upright Boston pianos are entry-level Steinways. These top-grade instruments allow students to discern the nuances and dynamics of a good-quality instrument. This also improves the quality of their learning experience.

With its large soundboard and longer strings, our Boston grand piano produces rich, full musical tones to help advanced students prepare for performances and concerts.

Piano Lessons

Many parents, contemplating piano lessons for their child, mention quitting piano lessons as children. Their main complaints were a strict teacher or that their only option was to learn classical music. How times have changed! Our teachers love inspiring kids with music they enjoy! While we teach the basics from a method book, we make learning fun by teaching their favourite pop song or improvising over chord progressions. Some students use skills learned in private lessons to join our rock band program.

We teach all Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) levels for students interested in classical music, and prepare you for examinations. Our piano teachers are deeply familiar with the RCM syllabus and curriculum. We have helped students receive high RCM honours, win competitions, and receive placements at local festivals and performances.

Our Piano Teachers

Our piano teachers have at least one postgraduate music degree, are professional performers and have several years of teaching experience to help you learn and develop a love of music. The rapport between student and teacher is an essential element in musical learning.

Our trial lesson packages are designed to help you select the right teacher who can help you meet your personal goals. All our teachers provide the basics of learning proper technique, note reading, rhythm and theory, as needed. From there, you can learn to play any music style, from pop to improvisation with jazz.

Piano Lesson Books

Your teacher will recommend music books once they assess your learning level during the first lesson or two. You may purchase the books from our online music bookstore. They can help you explore different musical styles with corresponding learning material as you advance through the levels.

How Long Does it Take to Learn Piano?

Every child learns at a different pace. Typically, it takes 1 – 2 years for a new piano student to work through the basics and progress to the Royal Conservatory of Music graded levels. Kids’ brains are wired to learn quickly. Our music teachers will work at your child’s pace to keep them engaged and enthusiastic. Children are generally able to play simple songs within the first few lessons.

Renting or Owning a Piano

You will need to purchase or rent a piano to practice at home. Students can start by renting or buying a keyboard instead of an upright piano. Not only are they cost-effective, but in apartments and smaller homes, they offer the flexibility of volume control. We recommend keyboards with a complete set of 88 keys. Also, keyboards with weighted keys closely mimic pianos, where the notes get louder the harder you hit the keys.

An upright piano can be a good investment if you have the room for it, once the student’s skills improve and they express a sustained interest in advancing.

Developing a regular routine to review what you learn during your piano lessons will help you progress steadily through the levels. Here’s a fun fact about practice: According to forward-thinking Canadian journalist Malcolm Gladwell, it takes 10,000 hours to become a world expert on anything! Playing music is about training your mind and establishing muscle memory; daily practice is the only way to get good at it. Making time daily to practice what your child learns in school will help them knock down those 10,000 hours quickly to become world-class piano players!

Performances & Recitals

Performing is an essential element of musical learning, and our students have many opportunities to perform at our Spring and Winter recitals, community events, and our Music and Munchies” mini recitals. These opportunities help keep students motivated and build their confidence.
