Drum Lessons for Kids

Drum Lessons for Kids | On The Off Beat Music School

Drum lessons are great for kids, helping them develop essential skills while having fun. They enhance coordination, motor skills, and concentration, making it an excellent activity for overall cognitive development. Mastering rhythms requires practice and perseverance. Consequently, drum lessons build discipline and patience. Most of all, drums provide a robust and dynamic medium for children to channel their pent-up energy in a creative way.

Most children start with 1/2 hour lessons on the same day and time each week. As they progress, the teacher might recommend longer lessons.

Our Drum Studios

Drum Studio | On The Off Beat Music School

Each studio is equipped with two drum sets, one for the student and the other for the teacher to demonstrate.

Drum Teachers

All our drum teachers have at least one postgraduate music degree, and are professional musicians who perform around the city. We will match you with one that fits your personality, musical style, and personal goals. All of them teach the basics and proper technique, as well as rhythm and theory skills as needed. We teach all the popular styles including punk, rock, pop and jazz drumming,

Starting Drum Lessons

We recommend starting with one of our trial lesson packages, which provide an opportunity to try lessons with different teachers. From there, you can enrol for our regular term lessons.

Once your teacher has assessed your level, they will recommend a suitable music book, which you can purchase from our online music bookstore. Your book will be available for you at your next lesson. As you master the technical aspects of drumming, your teacher will introduce you to various musical styles to help you develop a deeper love of music.

How Long Does It Take To Learn Drumming?

That all depends on you! Our drum teachers work at the students’ pace to keep them engaged and enthusiastic. Beginners are generally able to drum to simple songs within the first few lessons.

However, practice makes perfect! Here’s a fun fact about practice: According to forward-thinking Canadian journalist Malcolm Gladwell, it takes 10,000 hours to become a world expert on anything! Playing music is about training your mind to learn rhythm, timing and patterns. Daily practice is the only way to get good at it. Developing a routine to practice what is learnt in school can help students knock down those 10,000 hours quickly to become world-class drummers!

Renting or Owning a Drum Set

You will need to purchase or rent a drum set to practice at home. We recommend Long and McQuade or Remenyi for instrument rentals or purchases. Drums can be noisy instruments, especially if you live in an apartment or a small house. Electronic drum sets will allow you to control the volume, but an acoustic set is better if noise levels are not an issue in your living situation. We also require you to purchase a set of drumsticks to bring to lessons.

Performances and Recitals

OTOB provides numerous opportunities for students to perform in community events, recitals, and our “Music and Munchies” mini-recitals. These opportunities help keep students motivated and build their confidence. Some drummers also join our rock bands to get acquainted with playing in a group setting and meeting new friends.
