Is early childhood music education worth it, or is it just a fun extracurricular activity? You may have asked yourself this as you explore meaningful ways to support your child’s development during the most critical early years. Research shows that early childhood music education does far more than introduce songs and instruments—it supports brain development, language skills, emotional regulation, and social connection. From improved listening and memory to substantial confidence and creativity, music can play a decisive role in shaping how young children learn and grow.

Scientists have studied the extraordinary impact of music on the brain. In our previous blog, we explored how learning a musical instrument improves neuroplasticity, which enables the brain to form new neural pathways throughout life and how this can benefit individuals at any age. In this article, we’ll explore how music benefits babies, preschoolers and toddlers to help you decide whether it’s a worthwhile investment for your child and family.

Benefits of Music for Babies
Music classes for babies nurture the parent-baby bond through engaging activities, soothing songs, cuddles, and joyful experiences. Early childhood music education at this age supports rapid brain development, just when their brain is developing sensory cognition. This process enables tender brains to integrate sight, sound, touch, and other sensory inputs to help them understand and interact with the world. Comforting sounds, rhythm, and movement create neural connections related to listening, memory, and language.
At our Littlest Beats Early Childhood Music Classes, parents and babies come together to foster bonding and emotional security. Babies learn to recognize tones and familiar voices. We help them internalize music and use their whole bodies to feel beats and rhythms with a variety of age-appropriate musical instruments, clapping, and bouncing.
How Toddlers Benefit from Early Childhood Music Education
Young infants and toddlers absorb music like sponges. At this age, they are learning how to speak, interact socially and coordinate their bodies for independent movement. Our Early Childhood Music Group Classes for toddlers are parent-child sessions organized by age for toddlers ages 1 to 3. Kids will learn new words by singing simple songs, and the group format helps them listen, take turns and cooperate. In addition, musical rhythms help them explore simple body movements, such as swaying, wobbling, and rolling on the ground, which support their confidence and independence. We also start introducing our toddlers to different age-appropriate instruments and sometimes will bring in a guest performer to introduce kids to new instruments!
Why Should Preschoolers Learn Music?
Our Little Beats Early Childhood Music Classes prepare preschoolers for private lessons when they turn 5 or 6. They attend class independently and learn collaboratively with other kids of the same age. We offer opportunities for improvisation, musical exploration, and singing.
Early childhood music education at this age supports school readiness by strengthening attention, memory, and early literacy skills. They learn basic rhythms (quarter notes, rests, etc.), melodies, and develop focus while holding beats. These concepts help them recognize patterns and support early math skills. Singing helps them explore phonemic awareness and reading readiness. In addition, music classes nurture their creativity, self-regulation and teamwork. The cognitive and emotional skills they develop here become foundational for classroom learning environments. We also start introducing our preschoolers to different age-appropriate instruments and sometimes will bring in a guest performer to introduce kids to new instruments!
Early Childhood Music Education at OTOB
A note from OTOB owners Michael and Carissa: As musicians, we exposed our own children to music when they were infants. When we are asked if Early Childhood Music Education is worth it, our answer is an emphatic yes! We actually started the “Little Beats” program for our own kids as we highly valued early childhood music education. We refined the program as we observed how music learning supported them through transitions from infancy to school. Today, our early childhood music education program is comprehensive and thoughtfully designed to build strong musical foundations while supporting each child’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. We have had many other parents who put their children through our “Little Beats” program tell us how well their children adjusted to private lessons and how the skills they learned through the classes helped them have more confidence and success while learning an instrument. When asked what sets us apart from other music classes we believe it is our highly qualified teachers who have studied music and early childhood music education at reputable universities/colleges and are also musicians themselves. We also have many opportunities for kids who graduate the “Little Beats” program to take private lessons and/or join our after-school and summer camps, as well as rock band programs. These programs have kept kids engaged for years in a musically rich environment led by talented teachers.
